Federal Species at
Risk Act (SARA)
Is a Federal Act respecting the protection of wildlife
species at risk in Canada. The purposes of the Species at
Risk Act (SARA) are to prevent wildlife species in Canada
from disappearing, to provide for the recovery of wildlife
species that are extirpated (no longer exist in the wild in
Canada), endangered, or threatened as a result of human
activity, and to manage species of special concern to
prevent them from becoming endangered or threatened.

Listed ecosystems
and species
Species and ecological communities are assigned
to provincial lists depending on their Provincial
Conservation Status. Blue-listed species include any
native species or ecological community considered to
be of Special Concern (formerly Vulnerable) in British
Columbia. Species or ecological communities of Special
Concern have characteristics that make them particularly
sensitive or vulnerable to human activities or natural
events. Blue-listed species or ecological communities are
at risk, but are not Extirpated, Endangered or Threatened.
